Cookies – what are they and what do they do?
Basically cookies are tiny files that get placed on devices used to surf the internet and they contain information relating to the user’s website experience. Cookies only stay on a device either for that particular session, or sometimes they can expire at a certain date in the future which is set by the website.
What kind of cookies are there?
Session Cookies
these only last for as long as you’re on the particular website. They either disappear after an inactive period of time, or they expire when they’re no longer required. These are the sort of cookies that we use at Polandrugbyfestival.
Persistent Cookies
These are stored on devices for a period that is longer than one visit. These may be used to store preferences for a particular website.
First and third party cookies
This identifies who has generated the cookie. First party cookies are generated by the website you’re looking at. Third party cookies are generated by an external domain that you’re not currently looking at – this is often because of an advert or banner that is being displayed by the first party website.
What is a ‘Session’?
When you open your browser a unique alpha-numeric random number is created – this is known as a SessionID. It is this SessionID that is used to track a user through their journey on our website(s). The SessionID only lasts as long as you have your browser open, or until it may expire due to inactivity.
Why are cookies necessary?
We use ‘Session’ cookies so we can identify people moving through our site. Initially we simply use the SessionID to identify a user. For example with our shopping cart a user navigates round many different web pages looking for things which are of interest. When they find something, they add it to the cart. We need to know which items have been added and by whom so we can display these to the user in the future (usually when they click the view cart button).
As the user progresses through the booking process, we introduce new cookies holding more information – we prefer to hold this in the temporary session. Our policy is to only record information that is necessary.
To summarise, we only keep personal information in the ‘memory’ of a session until we receive an order. We then send this information to our database. We do not hold any personal information in cookie files for longer than the lifetime of the session.
